The Putting League started 1935 and was known firstly as the G.W.R.S.A putting section then later as the British Rail (Western) Staff Association Club. The Putting League was formed by the railway workers to play against their colleagues and to socialize outside of “the works”. The Team Names reflected their departments in the Railways works.
In 1935 there were enough teams to form 1 league, but by the end of their first season more teams wanted to enter so the following year 1936 -1940, 2 leagues were formed. Unfortunately the 2nd World War came and there was no putting played during 1941 – 1946. But fortunately the workers got the putting under way again in 1947 and by 1964 the 2 leagues were up and running. During the sixties even more teams entered and in 1965 a 3rd league was introduced. This was a good time to be in the railways and in 1978 a 4th league was added and people were really enjoying themselves so much so that in 1980 a 5th league as added. Sadly this only lasted 4 seasons and due to the impending closure of the railways in 1986, there were only 3 leagues playing, but thanks to everybody`s commitment the 3 leagues ran until 1998.
The 2 remaining leagues operated until the closure of the Shrivenham Road Sports Club (2005) where all the games were played, and the Putting section were forced to find another home. Fortunately, we were able to use the Premier Sports Club and developing 2 new courses to play on, we stayed there until 2011. Since 2012 the League has been based at Nalgo Sports and Leisure Club grounds where we enjoy excellent facilities in a warm welcoming environment.
